業　　績 

【研究活動の経験】
氏の研究分野は、人類学・霊長類学である。氏は、大学院在学中に日本列島に生息するニホンザルの形態・社会・生態の地域変異を調査し、ニホンザルの列島への分散過程、環境経度による社会の変異を明らかにした。また、屋久島では照葉樹林帯に生息するニホンザルを餌付けせずに観察し、ニホンザルの自然群が、分裂や群れの乗っ取りなど多様な群れ再生を行っていることを解明した。その後、研究の場をアフリカに移し、1970年代後半から40年近くの長期にわたり、中央アフリカ熱帯雨林における自然と人間に関する調査研究に従事した。
アフリカではゴリラの社会・生態に関する調査を3亜種4地域にわたって調査し、ゴリラの地域変異、種分化の特異性、種内の社会変異とその要因について研究した。とくに、ゴリラが低地から高地まで広く分布し、果実食と葉食を組み合わせて遊動域の広さを調節し、群れのサイズや構成を変化させている実態を明らかにした。子殺しという雄の繁殖戦略が果実食の多い、集団規模の小さい低地で起こりにくい点を指摘している。また、同所的に生息するゴリラとチンパンジーの生態・社会の特徴を比較し、系統の近い2種の類人猿が同じ果実を食しながら補助食物や採食方法を変えて共存している実態を解明し、その進化的背景を検討し、その成果をもとにして初期人類の生活・社会の進化史を再構成するなど、数多くの論考を発表した。

氏の研究成果は、110余の原著論文として多くは国際誌に公表されている。そのほかに140余の著書、760の総説・解説などを著し、研究成果を分かりやすく説明し啓蒙活動に努めている。また、多くの日本人研究者を育成するとともに、現地研究者の学位取得やアフリカ人留学生の受け入れにも務めている。

氏は研究活動のみならず、豊富な調査経験に基づいて、日本の屋久島と中央アフリカの熱帯雨林域における人と自然の共生に関する草の根的な活動を展開してきた。
鹿児島県屋久島では、1984年に地元の若い世代と「あこんき塾」を立ち上げて、屋久島に特異な生態系と伝統的な自然利用について学ぶ活動を展開した。この活動は世界自然遺産の指定につながり、屋久島オープン博物館構想や屋久島フィールドワーク講座に発展し、2013年に「屋久島学ソサエティ」という研究者や地元住民が集って現在の課題を話し合う地域学会として継続されている。
1991年以来政治的混乱の続くコンゴ民主共和国のカフジ・ビエガ国立公園では、地域主導によるNGO「ポレポレ基金」の創設に参加し、その支部を日本に立ち上げ、内戦化で密猟がはびこる中でゴリラが地元民とともに生き残ることを可能にした。また、政策的提言を行うとともに、地元に保護と地域開発に関わるゴリラの保全や、人間とゴリラとの共存をさぐる活動を展開している。
また、ガボン共和国のムカラバ・デュデュ国立公園では、ゴリラを始めとする野生動物と地域住民の共生を目指し、生物多様性の調査、生態系マップの作成、衛生管理、住民の環境教育、エコツーリズムの企画を住民とともに実施した。

さらに氏は、霊長類学・人類学から得られた知見をもとに、霊長類、とりわけ類人猿の生態・社会・生活史の特徴を人間と比べ、人類に特異的な特徴がいかなる進化史的背景をもって発達してきたかを考察し、それらが現代の社会で人為的な環境の下で変容を迫られ、環境条件とミスマッチを起こしていることを指摘し、科学技術が急速に発展して地球環境も人体も大きく変わる10年後、30年後の未来に対して警鐘を鳴らしつつ、その対策を提案してきた。
とりわけこの数年は、人類と人間社会の進化成立の深い洞察の上に立って、新型コロナ禍や地球環境崩壊の危機といった混迷の時代にあって、現代社会が抱える「こころ」や少子化・高齢化などの問題に向けて積極的に発信するなど、幅広い活動を展開している。

【組織運営の経験】
氏は、1983年よりアフリカの類人猿や狩猟採集民の生態・社会・共存を対象とした海外学術研究、基盤研究Aの代表者を途切れることなく継続し、2007～11年には基盤研究S「資源利用と闘争回避に関する進化人類学的研究」の代表者、2009～14年にはSATREPS(地球規模課題対応国際科学技術協力（SATREPS）「「野生生物と人間の共生を通じた熱帯林の生物多様性保全」（相手国：ガボン共和国）の代表者を務めた。2011～14年には英文の学術誌PRIMATESの編集長、2006～10には日本霊長類学会会長、2008～12年は国際霊長類学会会長、2009～11年には京都大学教育研究評議会評議員、2011～13年には京都大学大学院理学研究科長、理学部長、2012～13年には京都大学経営協議会委員、2017～19年には国立大学協会会長、2014～20年には京都大学総長、2017～20年には日本学術会議会長を務めた。1992年からコンゴ民主共和国に設立されたゴリラと人との共存を目指すPole Pole Foundationの日本支部長、2021年からは大学共同利用機関法人人間文化研究機構総合地球環境学研究所所長を務めている。
